Doctors Need Emotional Intelligence, Too
Self diagnosis is dangerous for a hypochrondriac such as myself, but I did it anyway. I needed to know what was wrong. I searched online for joint pain causes and arthritis was the popular term. Arthritis? The disease old people get? Digging deeper, I learned arthritis conditions were treated by rheumatologists. I did not have a doctor at the time, so I went to my fiancé's doctor to confirm my thinking.
My knees locked on the way to the doctor's office and I needed help getting out of the car. Dr. P was pleasant, but his EQ numbers were low. He rattled off potential diseases, like a waiter going through a restaurant's specials. "It could be different forms of arthritis, a virus, cancer..." My eyes bulged as he nonchalantly mentioned my possible fate. He drew blood and told me to set up an appointment to review the test results. Although not impressed with his bedside manner, I had little choice.
A couple days later, it was New Year's Eve and we had friends over. I put on a brave front, but was distracted and anxious when the clock struck midnight. What would the new year have in store for me?
