Wheeled Into Surgery.

My family received word the liver was secured. It was time to prepare for surgery. My mom, affectionally known as “Momma”, shares her memories as if the entire ordeal happened yesterday.

Spirituality Connection

“Before Danni was wheeled into surgery, we had a prayer circle in her room. I found out later my co-workers went into my office and also prayed for the surgery’s success. I never thought the worst, even when we heard the news about Danni’s liver. That is how strong my faith was.

I also remember a doctor giving me an angel pendant. She had given one to her mother and wanted me to have it. She told me everything was going to be ok. Danni was then wheeled out of the room.

The Wait

We were told surgery would last 6-7 hours. We were taken to an open area atrium to wait for news. It was not a typical waiting room, it felt like a hotel lounge. Hospital personnel were so wonderful; they brought out blankets for us. We had plenty of food the family had brought and my co-workers had also sent food. Danni’s Aunt Sarah, who was in her 70s out the time, refused to move until she heard news. She would not even go to the bathroom. There were a few moments as laughter as we reminisced about Danni’s personality, but waiting for news was difficult.

Transplant Success

After what seemed like an eternity, the surgeon came to talk to us.

The surgery was successful! The liver started producing bile immediately; a good sign. We were able to see her a couple hours later in the surgical ICU. There was blood everywhere and Danni was swollen all over. The wait was also not over. Now that Danni survived surgery, the next question was when would she wake up? The doctors were not sure if the brain pressure had affected her. But, she was alive. She was alive.”
