Facing The Unknown.

It is eerie to be told what happened to you by a 3rd party. It feels like you are listening to a story about someone else. But my twin sister, Stormy, told me what happened after my blood test in late September. Doctor S called and questioned the accuracy of my results. My numbers were significantly off, so she wanted me to see a liver specialist. Since I don’t drive and my spouse had to work, Stormy came up to drive me to my appointment. In her words:

All morning I kept trying to wake her up, but she kept saying she needed five more minutes. She’s never been a morning person, but as the morning went on, she became less responsive. She was not herself and when I could not get her to sit up, I knew something was wrong. I called 911 and I was panicked.

She lived in an apartment with a confusing layout and I did not know her address. I did not want to leave her, but I needed to make sure the paramedics could find us.

When they got there, they assessed her and asked basic questions. She was sitting up in bed at the time. They asked her who the President of the U.S. is, and she said June 5th. When she said that, I wanted the paramedics to take her immediately to the hospital.

They did not appear concerned and said disorientation can be caused by low blood sugar, but I did not believe them. As they prepared to put Danni in the ambulance, I told them I was riding with her. They wanted me to follow them in my car, but I refused. I was not going to leave her. I knew something was really wrong with her.

I had noticed little things about Danni’s behavior the paramedics did not see. Yes, they saw her eyes were jaundice, but she had also had difficulty remembering details when Steph (my older sister) and I came to visit her a couple of days prior. The biggest clue that she was not herself was related to a video game. She had been talking about a video game she had been playing for weeks. We’ve both been gamers since we were kids, but she had trouble explaining how to play the game. I remember thinking this was out of character for her.

The ambulance took off for the hospital and I stayed by her side. I was terrified.
